First 2024 Corvette E-Ray TPWs Slipping to January, February
As someone who’s highly interested in the 2024 Corvette E-Ray, we’ve been watching closely those who have received the first allocations for the performance hybrid sports car and what their current status is.
When the first allocations went in, those who are planning an R8C delivery received their Target Production Week (TPW) as December 4th. Shane from the Museum says that GM will often use place-holder dates and then they firm up as production starts. Unfortunately, what we’ve seen happen over the past few weeks is that those with a December TPW have slipped to January, and then some of those have now started to slide into early February. Some have begun joking that the T in TPW should stand for Temporary instead of Target, although “Tentative” may still be the most accurate use of the word.
Those whose allocations were accepted and are not doing an R8C delivery are still status 3000. Among that group is the VIN 001 E-Ray purchased by Rick Hendrick which hasn’t been produced yet.
We’ve read some of the speculation online with people fearing the worst about the E-Ray still requiring development time, and I have even questioned my own sanity of wanting to order a car in this kind of environment…where cars are being built and not completed, where cars are being sent to Michigan for unknown updates, where cars are failing basic quality control checks before shipping.
The E-Ray is going to happen, and I am bound and determined for an E-Ray to be in my future, but what we’ve been witnessing at the Corvette Assembly plant is also happening across the board at other GM plants. So much so that Chevrolet cancelled weeks of anticipated DOSP dates (dealer order submission process) for their various models and have consolidated them all into one week for December (December 14th) and then one week in January (January 25th).
The other thing we are hearing which doesn’t affect the E-Ray as much as the Z06 is that visible carbon fiber aero is in extreme short supply. We’ve seen Z06 buyers extremely limited in what they can order and right now we are told there are barely any available Z06s being sold with Z07 due to the shortage of the required carbon fiber aero and ground effects packages. The carbon fiber issue has also affected fulfillment of the Engine Appear Packages and we’ve also seen shortages in some of the interior carbon fiber options as well.
For whatever reason, I am reminded of this part of the lyrics as Paul Simon sings his song Slip Slidin’ Away:
God only knows
God makes his plan
The information’s unavailable
To the mortal man
We’re working our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway
When in fact we’re slip slidin’ away
