After 50 Years of Dreaming, Family Surprises Dad with a 1966 Corvette
Stop dreaming and start driving, a famous Corvette salesman proclaims.
That adage certainly came true recently for a 74-year-old man from North Carolina whose dream of owning a vintage C2 Corvette like the ones he’d seen decades ago on the “Route 66” TV show was finally fulfilled through the kindness of his family.
Lynn Raynor’s wife Sandra enlisted the help of their daughter Meagan and son Cody to begin searching for a C2 Sting Ray like the one he’d always wanted. They finally found the perfect car – a Nassau Blue ’66 convertible with a 327/350 horsepower engine – in Simpsonville, South Carolina some four hours away from their home in Hampstead, North Carolina.
Lynn had owned a later model Corvette in his 20s but had to sell it to support his family, but since his retirement he’s been busy restoring an ’87 Corvette he found in a junkyard. His family kept the surprise C2 a secret by asking for his help inspecting an old 1971 GMC chassis.
Watch the tears of joy flow when Lynn gets out of their car and walks up to the ’66 Sting Ray, realizing what the real purpose of the trip was!
“He was noticing the surroundings in the neighborhood when we made the right-hand turn into a cul-de-sac,” Meagan says.
“There in the driveway was this absolute showstopper that, unbeknownst to him, was his dream car. He was so stunned I had to tell him to get out of the truck, and he was absolutely speechless as he approached the car and saw his name on the for-sale sign.”
Meagan explained that over the years her father had sacrificed so much for the family and never asked for anything in return, so “seeing his reaction as he first laid eyes on the car, seeing him process that it was his, is a memory I will forever cherish.”
Rarely has she seen her dad shed tears the way he did when he was “soaking in the fact the car was his,” Meagan says, and “it makes my heart swell to see the stress melt away from my dad” to be “replaced with a joy and a giddiness that I have never seen in him before.”
Both Lynn and Sandra are “smitten” with the car, Meagan says, and “they are enjoying this beautiful car together as often as possible.”
